Professional Responsibilities

For professional responsibilities, I attempted to advocate for my students by applying for a grant. One of the challenges I had since the beginning of the school year was my desire to bring literature related to my students’ cultural and linguistic backgrounds and not having the ample resources to meet the goal. My efforts to bring culturally relevant children’s books included bringing my own books and purchasing both new and used ones to expand our current corner library in the classroom.

I learned about the opportunity to apply for the Educators Making a Difference Grant last February, and fortunately, was able to apply in time. My proposal had two main parts: purchasing diverse books which should represent my students’ lives, and the author’s visit via virtual or in-person for read-aloud. I applied in late February and heard back in mid April with great news that I had been selected as one of their grant recipients! My artifact for Domain 4 is a letter from We Need Diverse Books (WNDB) to which I applied for a grant (Image 3). I will have one full year after the date of grant payment and hope this opportunity will bring my students better access to identity texts (Cummins et al., 2015).
